Carroll Is Most Intrigued by the Glanville Factor

Jerry Glanville was as glib as they come when he was coaching in the NFL or talking about football as a television analyst.

USC will find out on Sept. 3 whether Glanville can still scheme effectively.

In March, Hawaii Coach June Jones hired Glanville, 63, to run his defense. The opener against USC will be Glanville’s first coaching assignment since Jones replaced him as coach of the Atlanta Falcons after the 1993 NFL season.

USC Coach Pete Carroll said Wednesday that he does not know what to expect from Glanville, who last coached in college as an assistant at Georgia Tech in 1973.

“He’s been out of coaching for such a long time, he could go back to what he’s done before when was at a number of different places,” Carroll said. “It just depends. We don’t know what they’re emphasizing or what they think they need to do to stop us or any of that stuff.

“So it’s going to be a real interesting first quarter to see what’s going on.”

Carroll said he has not felt the same sense of mystery about an opponent since his first season at USC in 2001.

“You know that Jerry’s got so much background -- he could go a number of different areas. He’s not always been a 4-3 guy or 3-4 guy. I mean he’s done everything. He’s most capable of putting together a heck of a game plan, so we’re preparing for a lot of stuff.”

Strong-side linebacker Dallas Sartz is participating in full contact drills for the first time since sustaining a hip pointer Aug. 9.

Sartz, who played as a reserve in 2002 and started most of the last two seasons, missed more than a week of practice before he participated in Sunday’s scrimmage at the Coliseum. The Trojans practiced in full pads on Wednesday, and Sartz took repetitions throughout.

“If I tweak it one way or do something the wrong way, it will still bug me, but I’m fighting through it,” said Sartz, elected as one of four team captains last week. “It was killing me so much to sit on the sidelines and watch the rest of the team do everything. There’s nothing worse than that.

“I definitely felt the need to get back out there.”

Senior middle linebacker Oscar Lua said he could return today or Friday after receiving an anti-inflammatory injection for a bruised muscle in his lower left leg.

Redshirt sophomore Thomas Williams worked again in Lua’s place with the first-unit defense. Lua said he expected that he would remain on track to start against Hawaii.

The Trojans will practice today and possibly Saturday on the FieldTurf at Cromwell Field. USC will play on the artificial surface at Hawaii.... Receiver Whitney Lewis, who has not been practicing because of a shoulder sprain, could still play in the opener if he returns by next week, Carroll said.
