A new magnet for celebrities

It was just one of those nights, one of those crazy old nights. The paparazzi were 50 deep and so were the limos. The event was last week’s grand opening of LAX’s new Bolthouse Wednesdays and even celebrities arrived early because they knew the scene was gonna sizzle. (Particularly classy was the open bar, which lasted till midnight.) The new nightclub at the old Las Palmas attracted the likes of Mischa Barton, Jessica Simpson, Lindsay Lohan, Jared Leto, Enrique Iglesias, Rachel Hunter and “Baywatch” alum Traci Bingham, who rolled in with a handful of Marines just back from Iraq. Holed up in a quaint, candlelit VIP lounge were singer Pink, motocross star Carey Hart, Pennywise drummer Byron McMackin, No Doubt’s Tony Kanal and Wilmer Valderrama, who was displaying more bling than the King. Pink introduced us to her hairdresser Christophe, who’s done the ‘dos of such classy broads as Gwen Stefani and Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton. Turns out Christophe is the king of obscure rock trivia. Blame it on Cakeboy, his now-defunct band that at various times included members of Pennywise, Haunted Garage and TSOL. And speaking of TSOL, Christophe tells us singer Jack Grisham is now in the mortgage biz. That ought to look good on the resume.... In more LAX news, owner Loyal Pennings hand-delivered an invite to Fire Marshall Bob, the nickname of Los Angeles Fire Inspector Robert Gladden, who showed up bright and early Wednesday to keep tabs on the head count.... And since Bob’s always at the coolest clubs, we figured we would pass along his hottest tips: He suggests the Cabana Club on weekends and Tropicana on Fridays.... Oh, and we hear Magnolia, the latest from the folks behind the Bar, is opening in Hollywood (on Sunset east of Vine) in early September.

Seeing what could develop

Rumor mill: Stopped by Mood, and before we even got in the door a burly bouncer told me that the Frederick’s of Hollywood building across the street was recently purchased by a San Diego developer who plans to turn it into an entertainment complex. Meanwhile, Mood owner David Judaken says he’s breaking ground at the old club Vynyl on Schrader in September. Judaken is plotting two venues -- a lounge-restaurant and separate dance club.... Club kingpin Rick Calamaro says he’s got a big to-do on Labor Day at his poolside lounge, Backyard, at the W hotel in Westwood. Partnering up with promoter Alison Melnick (Nacional/Mood) and We Clothing, the Backyard is taking more than a dozen cabanas and filling them with bags for guests, with swag including short shorts. Cheeky.... This just in: Michael Sutton is debuting a weekly Friday promotion at LAX on Sept. 2. Opening night includes a birthday bash for Clipper Cuttino Mobley, hosted by superstar Kevin Garnett. Justin Timberlake already RSVP’d.
