At least 26 more people have died from house collapses, mosquito-borne encephalitis and other monsoon-related causes in India’s most populous state, bringing the death toll to 292 this rainy season, officials said.

More than 300 villages have been hit by flooding from the Ghaghra River in the eastern part of Uttar Pradesh, a state spokesman said.

The army has been called out to help rescue efforts in Azamgarh, one of the worst-hit areas 150 miles east of Lucknow, he said. More than 300,000 people have been affected.
