Like Kobe, Laker Fans Can Get Their Shots

Share

I haven’t watched many Laker games this year, but it’s apparent that Kobe Bryant’s shot selection is more egomaniacal than ever. Doesn’t $10 million buy a coach who knows when it’s time to sit a player down? The team is the Los Angeles Lakers, not the Los Angeles Kobe.

In more than 35 years of watching the NBA, I’ve never seen a player take such wacky shots with total impunity.

It has been interesting to watch Kobe toss up 30-36 shots a game and then pronounce that the Lakers cannot win with him carrying such a load. But I believe I may have a solution.

Because two to four of the Lakers are reduced to spectators during Kobe’s shoot-a-thons, why not assign one or two of them to steal the ball from Kobe during Laker possessions? This would get additional players involved in the offense, help Kobe, who obviously cannot help himself from shooting, and perhaps the steal could count as an assist if it leads to a Laker basket.

Other teams would be confused, would not be able to simply triple-team Kobe to get easy wins and when things settled down, the Lakers could again start running something resembling a team offense, with players distributing the ball, playing like a team, having multiple players in double figures each game and sitting at the top of their division.

You know, like the Clippers.

Let’s say you have a Rolls-Royce. You trade it for a Pinto, but you still have to pay Rolls-Royce expenses for three years. After the three years, you have a small chance of getting another Rolls-Royce but not likely. Not a real good plan, is it?

Ladies and gentlemen, I give you the Mitch Kupchak blueprint for success.

For anyone who has wondered why Phil Jackson seems so aloof, read the Nov. 27 interview with T.J. Simers. If you had to deal with such insulting, combative and accusatory questions every day, wouldn’t you be less than personable?
