Australian lawmakers passed tough counterterrorism laws that opponents warned would sweep away civil liberties.
The laws allow police and intelligence agencies to detain terrorism suspects without charge for 14 days and control their movement, including fitting them with electronic tags, for a year. The package also boosts police powers to stop, search and seize evidence from suspects.
