U.S. Invited to Bid on Building Nuclear Plant

Iran opened the door for U.S. help in building a nuclear power plant, a move designed to ease American fears that Tehran is using its nuclear program as a cover for building atomic arms.

“America can take part in international bidding for the construction of Iran’s nuclear power plant if they observe the basic standards and quality,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Hamid Reza Asefi said. The head of Iran’s atomic organization said Saturday that a light-water nuclear power plant would be built in the southwest.

Neither the State Department nor the White House commented on the offer. Ties between Tehran and Washington were severed in 1979 after Iran’s Islamic Revolution, and the U.S. forbids American companies from doing business there.
