Re “Always right, never wrong,” Opinion, Dec. 11

Jonathan Chait writes, “So whenever conservative policies crash and burn in the real world, rather than rethink their ideas, conservatives simply redefine the failures as un-conservative,” and he gives the example of President Bush’s cutting taxes while increasing spending.

If Republicans had stayed true to the conservative policy of cutting both spending and taxes -- with demonstrably bad impact on the economy -- that would be failed policy in need of rethinking from conservatives. The fact that Republicans are not acting conservative is not an example of failed conservative policy but of failed Republicans.
