Something new under the cirque

Share

The gymnasts, dancers, aerialists, comedians and figure skaters in this weekend’s premiere performances of “Cirque Sur Glace” have just one thing in common: All of the show’s 28 entertainers will perform on ice, whether it’s professional figure skating from world champs such as Rory Flack Burghart or the balance beam work of Olympic gymnast Shannon Miller.

“Cirque Sur Glace” is not affiliated with Cirque du Soleil, but it does share the world-renowned Canadian entertainment company’s sense of whimsy. At various points during the show, there will be kite-flying and aerial acrobatics, as well as performances by “silent comedian” Robb Zeiser and five-time U.S. National Ice Dance Champions Naomi Lang and Peter Tchernyshev.

“There’s a standard formula that goes on in ice shows: An introduction with the skater’s title, they do a routine and the audience claps,” said Lee Park, a specialty acrobatic figure skater who performs with a five-foot cube and who also produced “Cirque Sur Glace.” “We’re trying to get the audience to sit on the edge of their seat and never sit back.”
