One of President Hamid Karzai’s main rivals was elected head of the lower house of Afghanistan’s new parliament in a close seven-candidate vote.

Former Education Minister Younis Qanooni won 122 votes, to 117 for Abdul Rasul Sayyaf.

Qanooni is widely seen as one of Karzai’s primary rivals, having finished second in the presidential election last year.
