From Times Wire Reports

A draft constitution viewed as a crucial step toward lasting peace in Congo appeared likely to pass as vote counting from last weekend’s referendum continued.

With 75% of Congo’s 40,000 polling centers reporting, 83% of Congolese had voted in favor of the proposed charter, whereas 17% had voted against it, electoral commission Chairman Apollinaire Malu-Malu said. Final results are due next week.

The constitution is meant to pave the way for general elections next year in the nation, formerly known as Zaire and now as the Democratic Republic of Congo.
