Recognizing our troops: Guard and regular Army

Re “Once Home, Troops Face New Battle,” Dec. 27

Once again, the National Guard units are getting short shrift. They do the same jobs in Iraq and Afghanistan as the regular Army troops. They should have access to the same services at home as does the regular Army.

As a longtime fan of Garry Trudeau, his recent, poignant Doonesbury series on the plight of returning Iraqi veterans becomes all the more significant when one reads The Times’ article, which goes into much more detail regarding what is a true shame as to the treatment of the veterans and their families who are in need of our support. Let those who wear their support on their cars by means of decals admonishing all to “support our troops” find the same enthusiasm as Trudeau stresses for the need to assist them upon their return.
