No. 1 LSU Doesn’t Let Go of Mississippi State, 67-40

The nation’s leading scorer was no match for the Southeastern Conference’s stingiest defense.

Top-ranked Louisiana State held Mississippi State scoreless for almost 14 minutes during the first half and limited the Bulldogs’ Tan White to six-for-23 shooting in a 67-40 victory Sunday at Starkville, Miss.

Seimone Augustus scored eight of her 18 points during a 35-3 first-half run for LSU (21-1 overall, 8-0 SEC). The Tigers led, 37-9, at halftime. White finished with 20 points for the Bulldogs (14-8, 3-5).

No. 2 Ohio State 78, Indiana 46 -- The Buckeyes (22-2, 9-1 Big Ten), led by Caity Matter’s 18 points, beat the Hoosiers (9-12, 2-9) at Columbus, Ohio, to take sole possession of first place in the conference.

No. 3 Duke 75, No. 24 Florida State 64 -- Monique Currie scored 14 points for the Blue Devils (22-2, 8-1 Atlantic Coast), who used a 24-2 run early in the second half to overcome a 35-34 halftime deficit at Durham, N.C. Ganiyat Adeduntan’s 19 points led the Seminoles (19-5, 5-4).

No. 5 Tennessee 99, Mississippi 67 -- Shanna Zolman scored 21 points, and the Lady Vols (18-3, 8-0 SEC) made a school-record-tying 13 of 27 three-point shots in the victory over the Rebels (15-7, 5-4) at Knoxville, Tenn.

No. 7 Rutgers 69, Syracuse 61 -- Cappie Pondexter had 17 of her 21 points in the second half, and the Scarlet Knights (16-5, 7-2 Big East) forced 26 turnovers in their victory over the Orange (11-10, 3-7) at Piscataway, N.J.

No. 10 Michigan St. 68, Illinois 59 -- Liz Shimek scored 21 points for the Spartans (20-3, 9-2 Big Ten), including a three-point play in the closing minutes after the Illini (13-8, 5-6) had cut a 17-point deficit to two at East Lansing, Mich.

No. 14 Minnesota 76, Michigan 55 -- Janel McCarville had 21 points and 15 rebounds to lead the Gophers (18-4, 8-2 Big Ten), over the Wolverines (5-17, 1-10) at Ann Arbor, Mich.

Jamie Broback, the Gophers’ second-leading scorer and rebounder, sprained her left ankle early in the first half and sat out most of the game, playing only seven minutes in the second half.

No. 18 Georgia 68, Kentucky 64 -- Tasha Humphrey scored 32 points, including the last five for the Bulldogs (18-6, 7-3 SEC) in a victory over the Wildcats (14-9, 3-5) at Athens, Ga.

No. 20 Maryland 87, Clemson 82 -- Ashleigh Newman made all 21 of her points on three-point shots, and Kalika France scored 14 of her 19 points in the second half to lead the Terrapins (16-5, 5-4 ACC) over the Tigers (7-14, 1-8) at Clemson, S.C.

No. 22 Temple 75, Duquesne 53 -- Kamesha Hairston had 18 points for the Owls (18-3, 10-0 Atlantic 10) in a victory over the Dukes (7-14, 2-8) at Pittsburgh.

Purdue 50, No. 23 Penn State 44 -- Katie Gearlds scored 21 points, including two free throws with 21.7 seconds left, to help the Boilermakers (13-9, 6-5 Big Ten) upset the Nittany Lions (14-8, 9-2) at West Lafayette, Ind.
