Venezuela sent helicopters and naval ships to evacuate thousands of stranded people as the death toll from three days of floods and landslides rose to 16. Torrential rains began to ease after leaving thousands homeless.

Army helicopters landed at the country’s main international airport in La Guaira, carrying hungry, shivering victims rescued along the Caribbean coast.

More than 5,000 people were rescued in Vargas state, Defense Minister Gen. Jorge Garcia said, with about 2,000 more awaiting evacuation.
