Edward Patten, 65; Singer Performed With Gladys Knight & the Pips
Edward Patten, 65, a member of the Grammy-winning Gladys Knight & the Pips, died Friday in a suburban Detroit hospital of complications from a recent stroke.
Gladys Knight & the Pips recorded for Motown from 1966 to 1973 and for Buddah Records from 1973 to 1977. The group later recorded for CBS until breaking up in 1989.
The group was formed by Knight, her brother Merald Knight and cousin William Guest in Atlanta in 1957. Their first single, “Whistle My Love,” was released by Brunswick Records that same year. Patten joined the group in 1959.
The group, whose hits included “I Heard It Through the Grapevine” and “Midnight Train to Georgia,” won four Grammys and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996.
Patten, an Atlanta native, was one of the founders of Crew Records, based in Detroit and Atlanta.
