A small study from the world’s first mass immunization campaign against cholera suggests that the vaccine may work in people with HIV.

The finding, from Mozambique, could prove useful in Africa, where HIV is rampant, researchers reported this week in the New England Journal of Medicine.

Cholera is a major killer in developing countries, where it is spread mainly through contaminated food or water. An oral vaccine has shown promise against cholera, but it has been unclear whether it would work in people whose immune systems were weakened by HIV.
