Churchill’s velvety air-raid attire

I read with pleasure Jane Engle’s article on the new Winston Churchill Museum [“Churchill, Moment by Moment,” Feb. 6]. Regarding the red velvet suit that Sir Winston wore during air raids in London during World War II: It might seem as though he were celebrating Christmas all the time, but I rather think it was actually his adult version of what we youngsters during World War II grew to know as our “siren suits,” aptly named because when the air-raid warnings sounded, our mums dressed us hurriedly into our one-piece warm, cuddly suits and whisked us off to the nearest air-raid shelters.
