Singer Phil Crosby Jr. has put together...

Special to The Times

Singer Phil Crosby Jr. has put together an old school variety show. There’s a jazz quartet, a crooning vaudevillian tag team, a tap-dancing tween and a selection of seasonal songs. In his Willie Nelson twang, Crosby sings some of his late grandfather Bing’s most memorable songs. The audience, which includes actor Jack Klugman and his extended family, eats it up.

The setting is the TEN20 Cafe by Day Night Scene, the quirky name for the Wyndham Bel Age hotel’s supper club, which hosts nightly entertainment with a broad appeal.

“I love live performance and go to all the cabarets in town,” says Al Keep, a frequent customer at TEN20. “But this place is the friendliest place of all ...”

The shows are free and the parking is a bargain for the Sunset Strip, which is where the hotel is located (behind the Viper Room, just off the Strip on San Vicente).

“Years ago there were hundreds of clubs with food and drink and free entertainment. Now it’s harder to find,” says J.D. Kessler, a veteran jazz booker who worked at the Cinegrill for 14 years and is now a Bel Age manager and director of entertainment for the TEN20 club. “I’m trying to find a way to bring that back, and we’re off to a great start.”

The room, which is laid out simply with blue and yellow hues and tributes to Hollywood icons (for example, a full-size portrait of Marilyn Monroe made up our table cover) is spacious. All tables are set up for easy viewing of the stage area, which is at the far end of the dining area.

There’s also a large bar, where guests can come and just hang out.

Behind the stage area, there’s a lounge with sofas and chairs for those who want to get away from the main event, which is changed on a weekly basis.

“A lot of our talent use the room as a showcase,” Kessler says. “They’re new to the city or new to the biz and we give them a chance to get some exposure.”

Some of the mainstays include Monday night’s Cross Hart Jazz Experience, an upbeat jazz trio featuring bassist Ryan Cross, drummer Lorca Hart and pianist Josh Nelson. On Thursdays, singer-producer Les Michaels and pianist Ron Snyder host the Thursday Night Cabaret Series, a variety show that morphs into an open-mike showcase later in the evening. On Fridays the club invites the 11 O’Clock News Band to kick out some jazz-spiked R&B.;

In addition, TEN20 is the site of “Legendary Bingo” celebrity fundraisers, where actors shout out the numbers to help earn money for their pet charities. Coming up Jan. 22, actress Liz Sheridan (best known for her role as Jerry Seinfeld’s mother in “Seinfeld”) is singing to raise money for a local elementary school’s arts program.

The crowd is older and upscale and enjoys getting a taste of the Strip without any of the fuss. The TEN20 is only 2 years old, and Kessler’s ambition is to turn it into a first-rate jazz club.

That said, it would behoove the Bel Age to hire one of L.A.’s top designers to give it a face-lift. A Ricki Kline remake or Dodd Mitchell makeover does wonders for business. The TEN20 room is simple, a little too simple, and there’s no better way to add heat to a club than a buzz-worthy remodel.

In the meantime, though, the price is right (free), the entertainment’s fun and the food is provided by a chef who once served the queen of England and the pope.

“The food, entertainment and ambience in the room is great,” says Klugman, who shows up each time Crosby performs. “Phil Jr. is a vital link to the heyday of Hollywood, which many younger people today may not be aware of, but should know about.”

Says Crosby, who also has dates at the venue Feb. 6 and Feb. 20: “Playing in the TEN20 has been a great chance for me to cut my teeth and break into the jazz world. It’s a wonderful room.”
