Myanmar’s military attacked a major stronghold of the Karen ethnic rebel group, despite the two sides’ informal cease-fire, the insurgents said.

The rebels from the Karen National Union said government forces had attacked them at their Kalaw Waw camp across the border from Thailand’s northern province of Tak.

A rebel official said his group had captured seven Myanmar soldiers but gave no figures for Karen losses and did not say if the fighting was continuing.
