A U.S. Marine was killed in action south of Baghdad on Saturday and an Iraqi driver for the International Committee of the Red Cross was found dead a day earlier, officials said.

U.S. Central Command said in a statement that the Marine was killed in Babil province. It gave no further details. In other violence targeting U.S. forces, insurgents fired on an Army OH-58 Kiowa helicopter near Mosul, in northern Iraq. It made an emergency landing, and the two crew members escaped injury, the military said.

The Red Cross said the driver had disappeared while on duty Thursday and his body was found Friday. He had been working for the organization since July 2003.

“The ICRC condemns this killing in the strongest terms,” the group said in a statement. The driver, whose name was not released, was 40 years old and had a wife and four children.
