Maggette Shoots for Free Offerings

Corey Maggette, who made 526 of 620 free throws last season to rank first in the NBA in free throws made and third in free throws attempted, is on pace to increase those numbers this season.

After making 11 of 13 free throws in the Clippers’ 114-112 double-overtime victory over the Miami Heat on Friday night, he’d converted 275 of 322.

“A big part of what we do is trying to get him to the line,” Coach Mike Dunleavy said of the Clippers’ offensive strategy. “We set him up with a lot of opportunities.... If you want to get free points with people not guarding you, you have to attack and look for opportunities to create those situations.”

And Maggette, the Clippers’ top scorer, is always attacking.

“He’s got a tremendous body, great jumping ability, and he’s fearless,” Dunleavy said. “He goes in there and he’s not afraid to take a pounding. There are a lot of guys in this league who have great bodies, great athleticism, but aren’t willing to give up their bodies in that way.”

Maggette’s game-winning shot Friday kept the Clippers from the first triple-overtime game in franchise history. They’ve played seven overtime games this season, four that went to double overtime, all in Staples Center. They’ve won three of four after losing the first three.... Darrick Martin signed another 10-day contract.... Rick Brunson made his 13th start, one more than he made in his first seven NBA seasons combined. The journeyman point guard has played 751 minutes, another career high, with 46 games to play....Bobby Simmons, who had a career-high 13 rebounds Friday, also had a career-high eight assists, falling two assists short of a triple-double.... Mamadou N’Diaye, who had played nine minutes this season, played eight against the Heat. With Chris Kaman and Zeljko Rebraca fouling out trying to contain Shaquille O’Neal, Dunleavy threw N’Diaye into the breach and the 7-foot native of Dakar, Senegal, had two blocks and a rebound.
