A Good Argument to Abolish the Monarchy

Re “Critics Say the Prince Wore His Ignorance on His Sleeve,” Jan. 14: If there ever were an argument for the abolition of the monarchy, it is Prince Harry’s showing up at a party in a Nazi uniform, complete with swastika armband. If the royal family can’t educate its heirs to the throne by age 20 to know that the Nazis killed tens of thousands of Britons, destroyed large parts of London and posed perhaps the greatest threat to the existence of Britain in its history, then it is difficult to see why the monarchy ought to continue.

It is supposed to serve as a symbol of British unity and continuity. But if poor Harry hasn’t been taught the significance of the war in which his own great-grandparents and grandmother served as inspirations to millions, he and his family hardly deserve to receive taxpayer subsidies, not to mention the honor and respect of their subjects.
