Accident Blamed for ’02 Hindu Deaths on Train

The burning of a train carrying Hindu pilgrims, which triggered riots that killed about 1,000 people, was caused by an accident and not by Muslims, as Hindu nationalists had alleged, a railroad inquiry panel said.
The February 2002 blaze in the western city of Godhra in Gujarat state killed 60 people and led to religious riots in which mostly Muslims were killed.
