Still Buzzing About Matt Leinart’s Return

That so many people are shocked and surprised by Matt Leinart’s decision to stay at USC for another year says more about their characters than it does about Leinart’s.

You want to know how great USC quarterback Matt Leinart is? I’ll tell you how great. He’s so great that he hasn’t a clue how great he is.

I hope Matt Leinart really enjoys college. As an Ivy League graduate with a professional degree I applaud education, but if I’d had the opportunity to earn millions after my junior year (something I have yet to do in 40 years since graduation) it would have been a no-brainer! One can always get a degree.

Good luck to Matt and the Trojans.

Has anyone addressed the upbringing Matt Leinart must have had in order to make the decision he has made? Many of us parents teach our children all the right morals and values, but when it comes time for them to use all these good teachings, many fall short.

We can only pray more young people will bring forward and use those good values, as Matt has done.

Congratulations to Matt and his parents.

Friday morning, Jan. 14, Los Angeles Times Business section Page 1 headline: “Money Can’t Buy Happiness, Security Either” (according to a study by PNC financial advisors).

Friday afternoon, Matt Leinart announced: “I think college football and this whole atmosphere of being here with my friends and teammates that I have been with for four years is ultimately more satisfying and will make me happier than any amount of money could make someone happy.... I get $950 a month now. The money is not important to me.”

Coincidence? Did Matt Leinart read the business section that morning? Or is it just that Leinart has wisdom at his young age that few of his elders are ever able to grasp?

Nowhere in the articles, interviews or press releases does Matt Leinart mention that he is staying at USC for the education.

At least he is honest.

I can’t see why anyone would question the long-range benefits of Matt Leinart’s not rushing into the NFL. A perfect example is already in place to support his decision to stay at USC.

Peyton Manning used his senior college year; Ryan Leaf didn’t.
