Donors help fund San Diego artwork

The Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego announced Tuesday that it has received two $1-million donations toward the commission of a major site-specific sculpture by Richard Serra, to be installed at the museum’s downtown San Diego location. The commission will be part of the museum’s campaign to expand, renovate and endow MCASD Downtown.

In recognition of the gifts, the exterior arched space at the west side of the Jacobs and Copley buildings, which together make up the museum’s downtown expansion project adjacent to the historic Santa Fe Depot, will be named the Figi Family Concourse after donor J. Todd Figi, a member of the museum’s board of trustees. The other donation comes from longtime museum benefactors Sue K. and Dr. Charles C. Edwards of La Jolla. The Serra sculpture -- which will consist of six forged steel blocks, 52 by 58 by 64 inches each -- will be installed in the Figi concourse.

Museum spokesman Bryan Spevak said the $2 million in gifts will not cover the cost of the commission, adding that the museum would not comment on the total cost or how it plans to cover the remainder of the tab.
