Outfest, UCLA to preserve gay films

Share

Outfest and the UCLA Film and Television Archive are undertaking a major preservation initiative for gay and lesbian movies, festival Executive Director Stephen Gutwillig announced Thursday night at the event’s curtain-raiser at the Orpheum Theatre.

The opening of the film festival also was noteworthy for its first-ever introduction by a mayor of Los Angeles, Antonio Villaraigosa.

The Outfest Legacy Project for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Film Preservation will be a long-term effort to locate, preserve and restore movies such as the acclaimed AIDS quilt documentary “Common Threads.”

Gutwillig said that “Parting Glances,” one of the earliest theatrical films to address the effect of AIDS on the gay community, and the late-1970s feature documentary “Word Is Out” are among the works in jeopardy of being lost.
