From Times Wire Reports

An Iraqi man wept as he was sentenced to nine years in jail for his part in a disastrous immigrant-smuggling voyage to Australia in which an overloaded boat sank, killing 353 people.

Khaleed Shnayf Daoed, 37, was convicted by the Queensland state Supreme Court last month of organizing the smuggling of hundreds of immigrants to Australia on the boat, the Siev X, which capsized off Indonesia in October 2001.

Rescuers saved 45 asylum seekers after they spent 22 hours in the water.
