Matthew G. Axelson, 29, of Cupertino, Calif.; petty officer second class, Navy. Axelson was killed while conducting counter-terrorism operations in Afghanistan’s Kunar province. Coalition forces found the Navy SEAL’s body July 10 during a combat search-and-rescue operation. Axelson was the last to be accounted for from a four-man Special Forces unit that disappeared after a June 28 ambush in the rugged mountains of eastern Afghanistan.

He was assigned to SEAL Delivery Vehicle Team 1 at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.

Hoby F. Bradfield Jr., 22, of The Woodlands, Texas; specialist, Army. Bradfield was shot and killed July 9 while on foot patrol in Tal Afar, Iraq, west of Mosul. He was assigned to the 2nd Squadron, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment at Ft. Carson, Colo.

Deyson K. Cariaga, 20, of Honolulu; sergeant, Army National Guard. Cariaga was killed July 5 when his Humvee struck a land mine near Balad, Iraq, north of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 229th Military Intelligence Company, 29th Separate Infantry Brigade, Army National Guard in Kalaeloa, Hawaii.

Joseph P. Goodrich, 32, of Allegheny, Pa.; staff sergeant, Marine Corps Reserve. Goodrich was one of two Marine reservists killed July 10 by mortar fire in Hit, Iraq, on the Euphrates River. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 25th Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Division, Marine Corps Reserve in Moundsville, W.Va. As part of Operation Iraqi Freedom, his

unit was attached to Regimental Combat Team 2, 2nd Marine Division, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward).

Kevin B. Joyce, 19, of Klagetoh, Ariz.; lance corporal, Marine Corps. Joyce drowned June 25 when a cliff-side road partially collapsed and he fell from his convoy vehicle into the Pech River in Afghanistan’s Kunar province. Search teams found his body July 4 near Torkham Gate, Afghanistan. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, 3rd Marine Expeditionary

Force in Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii.

Ryan J. Kovacicek, 22, of Washington, Pa.; lance corporal, Marine Corps Reserve. Kovacicek was one of two Marine reservists killed July 10 by mortar fire in Hit, Iraq, on the Euphrates River.

He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 25th Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Division, Marine Corps Reserve in Moundsville, W.Va.

As part of Operation Iraqi Freedom, his unit was attached to Regimental Combat Team 2,

2nd Marine Division, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward).

Timothy J. Sutton, 22, of Springfield, Mo.; sergeant, Army. Sutton was killed Monday when his Humvee struck a roadside bomb in Baghdad. He was assigned to the 3rd Squadron, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment at Ft. Carson, Colo.

Eric P. Woods, 26, of Omaha; private first class, Army. Woods was killed July 9 when his vehicle struck an improvised explosive device in Tal Afar, Iraq, west of Mosul. A medic, Woods was on his way to evacuate a wounded soldier. He was assigned to the 2nd Squadron, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment at Ft. Carson, Colo.

Benyahmin B. Yahudah, 24, of Bogart, Ga.; specialist, Army. Yahudah was killed Wednesday when a car bomb exploded near his patrol in Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 64th Armor Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division at Ft. Stewart, Ga.
