Specter Favors Moderate to Fill Court Vacancy

The chairman of the Senate committee that will oversee hearings on President Bush’s Supreme Court nominee said he would like to see a moderate in the tradition of Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, who is retiring, and perhaps someone with experience in politics.
Sen. Arlen Specter (R-Pa.) said he didn’t want to recommend a candidate because of his role on the Senate Judiciary Committee. But he said he would like to see a nominee who has experience outside the judiciary.
Those mentioned most often are federal appeals court judges Samuel A. Alito, Emilio M. Garza, J. Michael Luttig, John G. Roberts Jr., Michael W. McConnell and J. Harvie Wilkinson III.
