Multiplexes aimed at Latinos

A Latino producer said Wednesday he plans to build at least eight multiplex movie theaters in the United States catering to American-born, English-speaking Latinos.
Moctesuma Esparza said his Maya Cinemas will show mainstream Hollywood movies but also will dedicate at least one screen at each location to presenting what he described as “specialized, community-interest films.”
The first 14-screen complex is due to open July 29 in Salinas, Calif. The other seven will open in 2006, Esparza said.
He said he also has formed a production and distribution company, Maya Pictures, to make English-language films and TV shows for Latinos.
