A roadside bomb killed four American soldiers in southwest Baghdad, the U.S. command said Tuesday.

Jim Driscoll, a spokesman for the Georgia National Guard, said the victims were assigned to the 48th Infantry Brigade. They were the Georgia Guard unit’s first combat casualties since World War II.

The U.S. statement said the Task Force Baghdad soldiers died Sunday night, when their vehicle ran over the bomb. At least 1,786 American service members have died since the Iraq war began in March 2003, according to the Pentagon.
