From Times Staff and Wire Reports

The training ship known to generations of Navy recruits as the Neversail has been designated a state historical landmark, officials said Friday.

The ship was part of the Naval Training Center from 1949 to the center’s closure in 1997. The two-thirds scale model of a destroyer escort helped recruits learn basic seamanship. The property is being developed as a housing and commercial project.
