Governor OKs Overhaul of Children’s Agency
A measure overhauling Child Protective Services was signed into law in Arlington by Gov. Rick Perry, who had declared the issue an emergency after several child homicides by parents who had been investigated for abuse.
Perry signed the measure at a child advocacy center in a room adorned with dozens of stuffed animals. “Today, Texas is taking a significant step to restore hope to our most vulnerable citizens,” he said.
Lawmakers appropriated about $250 million to reform Child Protective Services, saying it would allow the agency to hire an additional 2,500 workers and cut caseloads.
