Conductor receives honor

Austrian conductor and musician Nikolaus Harnoncourt is one of three winners of the 21st annual Kyoto Prize for Lifetime Achievement, awarded by the Inamori Foundation in Japan.

Harnoncourt, as well as U.S. electronics engineer George H. Heilmeier and U.S. ecologist Simon A. Levin, will receive a gold medal and 50 million yen (approximately $465,000) during ceremonies Nov. 10 in Kyoto. The trio will also participate in the Kyoto Laureate Symposium in San Diego early next year. Harnoncourt, 75, was honored for “exceptional creativity as a conductor and performer.”
