The Defense Department last week identified the following American military personnel killed in Afghanistan and Iraq:

Leroy E. Alexander, 27, of Dale City, Va.; staff sergeant, Army. Alexander was one of two soldiers killed June 3 when a roadside bomb exploded near their convoy vehicle in southeastern Afghanistan. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group at Ft. Bragg, N.C.

Louis E. Allen, 34, of Milford, Pa.; first lieutenant, Army National Guard. Allen was one of two soldiers who died Wednesday of injuries suffered Tuesday in a suspicious explosion in Tikrit, Iraq. U.S. authorities launched a criminal investigation after the Army ruled out a suspected mortar attack; the cause remains under investigation. Allen was assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 42nd Infantry Division, Army National Guard in Troy, N.Y.

Roberto Arizola Jr., 31, of Laredo, Texas; sergeant, Army. Arizola was killed Wednesday when an improvised explosive device detonated near his Humvee in Baghdad. He was assigned to the 297th Military Intelligence Battalion, 513th Military Intelligence Brigade at Ft. Gordon, Ga.

Dustin V. Birch, 22, of St. Anthony, Idaho; lance corporal, Marine Corps Reserve. Birch was among five Marines killed Thursday when a roadside bomb exploded near their vehicle while they were conducting combat operations with the 2nd Marine Division, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward) in Haqlaniya, Iraq, northwest of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 4th Tank Battalion, 4th Marine Division, Marine Corps Reserve in Boise, Idaho.

Eric T. Burri, 21, of Wyoming, Mich.; specialist, Army. Burri was killed Tuesday when an improvised explosive device detonated near his Humvee in Baghdad. He was assigned to the 623rd Quartermaster Company, 1st Corps Support Command at Ft. Bragg, N.C.

Victor H. Cervantes, 27, of Stockton; sergeant first class, Army. Cervantes was killed Friday when his patrol unit was attacked with small-arms fire in southeastern Afghanistan. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne) at Ft. Bragg, N.C.

Daniel Chavez, 20, of Seattle; lance corporal, Marine Corps. Chavez was among five Marines killed Thursday when a roadside bomb exploded near their vehicle while they were conducting combat operations with the 2nd Marine Division, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward) in Haqlaniya, Iraq, northwest of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Tank Battalion, 1st Marine Division, 1st Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Pendleton.

Terrence K. Crowe, 44, of New York; lieutenant colonel, Army Reserve. Crowe was killed Tuesday when his unit was attacked with rocket-propelled grenades and small-arms fire in Tal Afar, Iraq, west of Mosul. He was assigned to the 10th Battalion, 98th Regiment, 4th Brigade, 98th Division, Army Reserve in Lodi, N.J.

Mark O. Edwards, 40, of Unicoi, Tenn.; staff sergeant, Army National Guard. Edwards died of a noncombat-related cause Thursday at his forward operating base near Tuz Khurmatu, Iraq, south of Kirkuk. He was assigned to the 2nd Squadron, 278th Armored Cavalry Regiment, Army National Guard in Erwin, Tenn.

Phillip T. Esposito, 30, of Suffern, N.Y.; captain, Army National Guard. Esposito was one of two soldiers who died Wednesday of injuries suffered Tuesday in a suspicious explosion in Tikrit, Iraq. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division at Ft. Benning, Ga.

Carrie L. French, 19, of Caldwell, Idaho; specialist, Army National Guard. French was killed June 5 when an improvised explosive device detonated near her convoy vehicle in Kirkuk, Iraq. She was assigned to the 145th Support Battalion, Army National Guard in Boise, Idaho.

Emmanuel Hernandez, 22, of Yauco, Puerto Rico; private first class, Army. Hernandez was one of two soldiers killed Wednesday in a mortar attack on a U.S. helicopter landing zone in Shkin, Afghanistan, a border town south of Kabul. He was assigned to the 319th Airborne Field Artillery Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade in Vicenza, Italy.

Douglas E. Kashmer, 27, of Sharon, Pa.; private first class, Army. Kashmer was killed Wednesday when the vehicle in which he was a passenger rolled over in a noncombat-related incident in Nippur, Iraq, southeast of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 70th Transportation Company in Mannheim, Germany.

Thomas O. Keeling, 23, of Strongsville, Ohio; lance corporal, Marine Corps Reserve. Keeling was among five Marines killed Thursday when a roadside bomb exploded near their vehicle while they were conducting combat operations with the 2nd Marine Division, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward) in Haqlaniya, Iraq, northwest of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 25th Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Division, Marine Corps Reserve in Akron, Ohio.

Michael J. Kelley, 26, of Scituate, Mass.; sergeant, Army National Guard. Kelley was one of two soldiers killed Wednesday in a mortar attack on a U.S. helicopter landing zone in Shkin, Afghanistan, a border town south of Kabul. He was assigned to the 101st Field Artillery Battalion, Army National Guard in Rehoboth, Mass.

Antonio Mendoza, 21, of Santa Ana; corporal, Marine Corps. Mendoza died June 3 at Brook Army Medical Center at Ft. Sam Houston, Texas, of injuries suffered Feb. 22 in an explosion in Ramadi, Iraq, west of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 5th Battalion, 11th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, 1st Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Pendleton.

Robert T. Mininger, 21, of Sellersville, Pa.; lance corporal, Marine Corps. Mininger was one of two Marines killed June 6 when a roadside bomb detonated near their Humvee in Fallouja, Iraq. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, Regimental Combat Team 8, 2nd Marine Division, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Lejeune, N.C.

Eric J. Poelman, 21, of Racine, Wis.; specialist, Army. Poelman was among three soldiers killed June 5 when an improvised explosive device detonated near their vehicle in Baghdad. He was assigned to the 3rd Squadron, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment at Ft. Carson, Colo.

Charles D. Robinson, 29, of Haddon Heights, N.J.; captain, Army. Robinson was one of two soldiers killed June 3 when a roadside bomb exploded near their convoy vehicle in southeastern Afghanistan. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group at Ft. Bragg, N.C.

Brian M. Romines, 20, of Simpson, Ill.; specialist, Army National Guard. Romines was killed Monday when an improvised explosive device detonated near his Humvee in Baghdad. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 123rd Field Artillery, Army National Guard in Milan, Ill.

Devon P. Seymour, 21, of St. Louisville, Ohio; lance corporal, Marine Corps Reserve. Seymour was among five Marines killed Thursday when a roadside bomb exploded near their vehicle while they were conducting combat operations with the 2nd Marine Division, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward) in Haqlaniya, Iraq, northwest of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 25th Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Division, Marine Corps Reserve in Akron, Ohio.

Jonathan L. Smith, 22, of Eva, Ala.; lance corporal, Marine Corps. Smith was one of two Marines killed June 6 when a roadside bomb detonated near their Humvee in Fallouja, Iraq. He was assigned to the 2nd Assault Amphibian Battalion, Regimental Combat Team 8, 2nd Marine Division, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Lejeune, N.C.

Brad D. Squires, 26, of Middleburg Heights, Ohio; corporal, Marine Corps. Squires was among five Marines killed Thursday when a roadside bomb exploded near their vehicle while they were conducting combat operations with the 2nd Marine Division, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward) in Haqlaniya, Iraq, northwest of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 25th Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Division, Marine Corps Reserve in Akron, Ohio.

Marc L. Tucker, 24, of Pontotoc, Miss.; lance corporal, Marine Corps. Tucker was killed Wednesday in a nonhostile vehicle accident in Asr Uranium, Iraq, west of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 9th Engineer Support Battalion, 3rd Force Service Support Group, 3rd Marine Expeditionary Force in Okinawa, Japan. As part of Operation Iraqi Freedom, his unit was attached to the 2nd Force Service Support Group, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward).

Brian S. Ulbrich, 23, of Chapmanville, W.Va.; specialist, Army. Ulbrich was among three soldiers killed June 5 when an improvised explosive device detonated near their vehicle in Baghdad. He was assigned to the 3rd Squadron, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment at Ft. Carson, Colo.

Justin L. Vasquez, 26, of Manzanola, Colo.; staff sergeant, Army. Vasquez was among three soldiers killed June 5 when an improvised explosive device detonated near their vehicle in Baghdad. He was assigned to the 3rd Squadron, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment at Ft. Carson, Colo.

Theodore S. Westhusing, 44, of Dallas; colonel, Army. Westhusing died June 5 in Baghdad of noncombat-related injuries. He is the highest-ranking officer to die in the Iraq war. Westhusing was serving as a staff officer with the Multinational Security Transition Command, which is in charge of training Iraqi security forces. He was assigned to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y.
