But what a thrill

Share

When I saw the one-time ad announcing a “one-night only” rock ‘n’ roll concert featuring Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard and Chuck Berry, I popped for the $60 ticket and drove to a city and Indian casino that I’ve never heard of before. Eventually, I ended up sitting near front center stage.

I too was a little surprised by the Killer’s appearance. I’m not sure of the last time he’s been in the sun, and his gait was a little slow, but he looked healthy, and, yes, he did “come alive once his fingers hit the keys.” Everybody stood up for the delivery of his solid, generous set. This same appreciation was also expressed for Little Richard, the most energetic of the three (“Aren’t I beautiful? I’m 73333333”), and for Chuck Berry’s laid-back pro performance. For three hours, three iconic performers gave all they had, and for three hours the whole audience was transformed into teenagers again. There was an almost reverent hush over the crowd leaving the theater. I think we were all quite aware that we may never have such a golden opportunity again.
