Mayor Criticized Over His New Bus System
Mexico City’s popular mayor took a rare bashing over problems with a new bus system he implemented to cut congestion.
Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, a favorite in the 2006 presidential race, launched a fleet of flashy buses this week that scoot down special central lanes on one of the city’s main avenues.
But reports of breakdowns, delays, overcrowding and traffic jams caused by the new buses covered the front pages of national dailies.
Newspapers said nine of the several dozen buses broke down and another crashed into passing cars.
They reported sketchy service and waiting times of up to 40 minutes.
