Syria Ally Reelected as Parliament Speaker

Lebanon’s parliament reelected a die-hard friend of Syria to the powerful post of speaker, prompting fireworks celebrations across Beirut and in Shiite Muslim villages in southern Lebanon by supporters of the onetime Shiite warlord.
Many of Syria’s allies have been swept from office, and many people had expected Nabih Berri to be no exception. He had been the prime enforcer of Damascus’ policies for the last 13 years in parliament.
