Alsop to conduct Concertgebouw

American conductor Marin Alsop will become the first woman to conduct the Amsterdam Concertgebouw Orchestra, the company said this week. Alsop, currently principal conductor at the Bournemouth Symphony in Britain, will appear June 8.
“It’s very simple: In our eyes, there were no good female conductors until now,” spokesman Sjoerd van den Berg said when asked why the premier Dutch orchestra had never before invited a woman to conduct.
