From Times Staff and Wire Reports

A strange world of see-through shrimp, crabs and other life forms teems around a newly explored field of thermal vents near the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, scientists reported in the journal Science.

Towering white mineral chimneys at a depth of 2,500 to 3,000 feet mark the area, named the Lost City after the research vessel Atlantis. The temperature of the fluids escaping the chimneys is 150 to 170 degrees, and the environment is extremely alkaline.
