Get your big break, but blink and you’ll miss it

Though the experience is probably more “A Face in the Crowd” than “A Star Is Born,” almost anyone with stars in their eyes now has an opportunity to shine in front of the camera. Or at least a chance to come away with a story about spending a day with hundreds of others as a feature film background spectator.

As the name might hint, BeInAMovie.com drums up throngs for films, usually for crowd, stadium or action scenes. According to its website, it has supplied cheering background spectators for movies including “Anger Management,” “The Bodyguard, “Forget Paris” and “Seabiscuit.” And it’s enthusiastic in encouraging the star-struck to sign up.

“It’s all free! No catch,” goes the pitch. Of course, there’s no pay either. But the site promises “great prizes” to be given away on the set, as well as free food and snacks and a free “How to Be a Paid Extra” book. “Experience everything from ‘hurry up and wait’ to edge-of-your-seat excitement and special effects,” the copy brags.

The site lists features in the offing. Through Tuesday, for instance, the company is rounding up spectators for “Akeelah and the Bee,” a drama about a young African American girl who enters a spelling bee, that stars Angela Bassett and Laurence Fishburne. No memorization required.
