Port OKs Design Work for Building
Los Angeles port commissioners agreed Wednesday to spend $1 million on a vacant port-owned building, even though it may be sold or leased soon to a school project launched by one of the commissioners.
School advocate Camilla Townsend joined in the 3-0 vote to commit $1 million for design work on the building, which is being sought to house a charter school that would open in September. Townsend founded the school project before her appointment as a commissioner.
Port of Los Angeles officials say the work will create office space for port employees, not classrooms for the new Port of Los Angeles High School.
The school’s board is interested in buying the building and also has talked to the port about leasing it.
