Hundreds of people making stiff-armed fascist salutes and waving Spanish flags gathered in Madrid to protest the removal of a statue of the late dictator Gen. Francisco Franco.

The statue, featuring the general on horseback, was the only remaining Franco statue in the city and was a rallying point for the shrinking number of his supporters who gather on the anniversary of his death on Nov. 20, 1975.

The statue was removed from the downtown San Juan de la Cruz square overnight without announcement.
