Alomar May Announce Retirement

Roberto Alomar left the park after playing only one inning Friday night and the Tampa Bay Devil Rays said they would have an announcement concerning his future today, leading to speculation that the 12-time All-Star was planning to retire.

Alomar made two errors at second base and struck out looking in his only at-bat during a 5-4 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays, his first game since March 10 because of a back sprain.

Devil Ray Manager Lou Piniella said Alomar told him he was having trouble seeing.

San Diego ace Jake Peavy left an exhibition game against the Texas Rangers because of a strained groin.

Peavy, who went 15-6 last season and led the major leagues with a 2.27 ERA, came out after retiring Andres Torres on a fly ball for the second out of the fifth inning.

Peavy, who was scheduled to pitch five innings, will be reevaluated today. He said he hoped to make his next scheduled start.

Roger Clemens strained his right hamstring and left Houston’s exhibition game against the Tigers after 1 1/3 innings. He said his hamstring felt tight the last two days.

St. Louis outfielder Reggie Sanders was recovering from an appendectomy, and the Cardinals don’t know when he’ll return to the lineup. They said that in the past, players who had the operation were generally out for a couple of weeks.

Sanders reported to camp Thursday morning and complained of stomach pain. He was evaluated by the team’s medical staff and diagnosed with acute appendicitis.

Former Dodger Jose Lima will start for the Kansas City Royals on opening day April 4 at Detroit. It will be the first season-opening start for the 32-year-old right-hander.... Colorado Manager Clint Hurdle announced that Taiwanese pitcher Chin-Hui Tsao will begin the season as the closer for the Rockies.
