How to Spark Interest in Solar Energy

Share

Re “A Ray of Hope for Solar,” editorial, March 24: The best way to introduce solar energy is to combine economic considerations with other worthy objectives, such as our security. We should prepare for emergency situations in which the grid goes down and distribution of fossil fuels is temporarily disrupted. Emergency services should be gradually equipped with a solar energy resource to complement backup generators.

As a next step, we could equip other facilities, such as schools, with such backup, as these might serve as shelters during emergencies. A hierarchy of needs could readily be established, and public policy directed toward this kind of progressive local “energy independence.”

It is time for us in this sunny state to be able to take advantage of the improvements in solar power for homes. This bill, introduced by state Sen. Kevin Murray (D-Culver City), clears up defects in the last one. It has bipartisan support; it deserves support from us all.
