Former Russian Official Arrested on U.S. Charges
Russia’s former nuclear energy minister was arrested in Switzerland’s capital on U.S. accusations of diverting up to $9 million from funds intended to improve Russian nuclear security, Swiss Justice Ministry spokesman Folco Galli said.
Yevgeny O. Adamov, a nuclear physicist, was arrested Monday in Bern. He is accused of diverting the money, provided by the U.S. Energy Department, to U.S. firms he controls or to investments in various projects.
Russia’s Foreign Ministry said the charges were unconnected to Adamov’s 1998-2001 tenure as minister.
