400 Backers of Banned Muslim Group Arrested
Police arrested at least 400 protesters as supporters of the banned Muslim Brotherhood, Egypt’s largest Islamic group, demonstrated for political reform.
More than 2,500 Muslim Brotherhood members and supporters rallied in front of a Cairo mosque. Other protests were reported in El Faiyum and several cities in the Nile Delta.
The protests were held on the 77th birthday of President Hosni Mubarak.
In September, a multi-candidate presidential election will be held for the first time.
Mubarak, who has been in power since 1981, hasn’t announced yet whether he will run, but he is expected to do so.
