U.S. Roman Catholic bishops started a nationwide campaign urging their faithful to support legislation to aid immigrants, including measures to provide legal status to undocumented workers.

“Our immigration system is broken and needs repair,” said Cardinal Theodore McCarrick, the leader of the Washington archdiocese, at a news conference announcing the effort.

Officials said that as part of the campaign, Catholic churches would be provided with outlines of sermons to be given on immigration. Speakers will also address Catholic lay groups on the subject, officials said.
