Gentle Persuasion, Perhaps?

Share

Re your May 6 editorial, “Hands Across the Taiwan Strait”: I agree with your view that China is playing the same old “divide and conquer” strategy toward Taiwan. This policy has always been offensive and ineffective to Taiwanese. If China is prudent enough to consider past experiences, a gentle persuasion can never go wrong. An honest goodwill is a thousand times more effective than threatening by the stick.

This was evident by the passage of the “anti-secession law” strongly opposed by Taiwan and the international community, as it benefits no one.

China can start on a friendly gesture by supporting Taiwan observer status in the World Health Assembly when it meets in Geneva on May 16.
