Lifting China Arms Ban
Re “China Gives Gift of Friendship, but Big-Ticket Orders Help,” news analysis, May 16: I concur that business-minded French and Germans are the biggest endorsers for lifting the China arms ban brought about by the Tiananmen Square massacre in 1989. June 4 is not too far away to mark the anniversary, but 16 years is a long time for China to ignore human rights. If the European Union lifts the arms ban, China can “lawfully” use that and Beijing’s recent passage of the anti-secession law as weapons to invade democratic Taiwan. Is this another Tiananmen in the making? Only history will tell.
