Perry Takes a Seven-Stroke Lead at Colonial

Kenny Perry is playing so well in the Colonial at Fort Worth that he knew he was about to have another good round when he missed his first putt.

“I hit the prettiest putt you’ve ever seen. I don’t know how it missed,” Perry said. “Perfect speed, perfect line....I knew immediately my putter had a good touch.”

Perry’s comfort level with the course was apparent again Saturday, when he shot a six-under-par 64 to take a seven-stroke lead over Billy Mayfair and Steve Stricker after three rounds.

Perry broke his 54-hole scoring record at 18-under 192, and has only one bogey -- on No. 8, his 17th hole Thursday. He has made 51 of 54 putts from 15 feet or less, including a five-footer after blasting from the sand to avoid a closing bogey Saturday.

“My game’s here. It’s just a matter of me being patient tomorrow and going out there and winning,” Perry said.

Christina Kim closed a one-under 70 with 11 consecutive pars and held a one-stroke lead over three players after three rounds of the LPGA Sybase Classic at New Rochelle, N.Y.

Tour rookies Paula Creamer and Joo Mi Kim and 2002 Sybase champion Gloria Park were tied at five-under 208.

D.A. Weibring shot a seven-under 65 to take a one-stroke lead over Dana Quigley and Tom Kite, who tied the tournament record with a 63, in the second round of the Bruno’s Memorial Classic, a Champions Tour event at Hoover, Ala.

Tennis

Venus Williams won her first title in a year, defeating Nicole Vaidisova, 6-3, 6-2, in a strong wind and drizzle in the Istanbul Cup at Turkey.

It was the 32nd championship -- and seventh on clay -- for Williams, and her first since May 2004 at Warsaw.

Anabel Medina Garrigues defeated Marta Domachowska, 6-4, 6-3, to win the Strasbourg International tournament in France.

Pro Football

New England linebacker Tedy Bruschi, who suffered a mild stroke three days after the Pro Bowl, doesn’t know if he will play this season.

“I’m going in [to the stadium] getting my health back in order, working out and that’s my step right now -- just testing myself physically, seeing where I am, seeing where I am tomorrow,” Bruschi told WBZ-TV in Boston.

Leigh Steinberg, who represents Ricky Williams, told the Palm Beach Post that the running back would report to Miami’s training camp in July.

“Ricky’s made the decision he wants to play again,” Steinberg said.

College Basketball

Boston College forward Sean Williams was suspended from the team and the university after he was charged with marijuana possession.

The 6-foot-10 Williams, projected to be a starter next season, was arrested by campus police Friday. He pleaded not guilty and is scheduled to appear at a pretrial hearing July 8.

Williams was the second Boston College freshman arrested in less than a week. Akida McLain was arrested in his hometown of Pittsburgh on May 13 after allegedly trying to pass counterfeit $20 bills. McLain said he didn’t know how the fake bills came into his possession.

Miscellany

Washington State running back Kevin McCall, a former Carson High standout, has reached agreement to plead guilty to fourth-degree assault with sexual motivation.

McCall, who remains suspended from the team, is scheduled for sentencing Monday. McCall had been listed as the Cougars’ No. 2 running back.

World Boxing Organization heavyweight champion Lamon Brewster defeated Andrew Golota on a technical knockout 53 seconds into a scheduled 12-round bout in the United Center in Chicago.

Brewster (32-2, 28 knockouts) knocked down the 37-year-old Golota (38-6-1, 31) three times with left hooks, the first coming 13 seconds into the bout.

It was possibly the last fight for Golota, who had said he would retire if he didn’t win.

David Lang, 37, who played for the Los Angeles Rams and Dallas Cowboys, was killed in a shooting near his home in Stone Mountain, Ga.

Mario Holmes, 20, was arrested and charged with murder, according to police. Lang’s funeral is scheduled for Friday in San Bernardino.
